Who's Better?

I was with a couple friends the other night watching some hockey when the two of them starting arguing over who is better, Ovechkin or Datsyuk?

I personally think that Ovechkin is better right now just by numbers. I think Datsyuk is awesome also, so I am kind of torn. Ovechkin is way better offensively, but Datsyuk is way better defensively. Ovechkin is just OK on defense, but Datsyuk is pretty damn good on offense.

If you look at it from a offensive/defensive stand point then the two are pretty even. When you look at it from a points stand point Ovechkin is way better. Just over these playoffs Ovechkin has 10 goals and 7 assists in just 11 games, while Datsyuk has 1 goal and 3 assists through 9 games.

I see so many different point of views on this argument and I really don't know which way to lean sometimes. That is when I realized how dumb an argument it is. Ovechkin carries his whole team while Datsyuk is not asked to do that, so until Datsyuk has to carry a team and win by himself then we can't compare. Not to take anything away from Datsyuk but he has much better supporting cast then Ovechkin.

If Datsyuk concentrated on scoring then he could possibly be known as one of the best scorers ever, but that's not who Datsyuk is. He is probably going to spend his career in Detroit and never have so little talent around him that he would have to do that. And if Ovechkin concentrated on being better defensively then I would bet he could be known as one of the best defensive forwards. He wont get that opportunity either cause Washington needs him to score to win.

If you got an opinion about it give us a comment. If you are still torn check out these videos to compare.

My buddy likes to call him "The Sniper"

Another Datsyukian Deke?

I agree its really not a comparison. Ovechkin is a pure scorer and has the gretzky numbers to back him up. He's obviously the better stat machine. But i bet you ask any defender in the league who they would rather cover on a one on one play and bar none they are picking Ovechkin. Datsyuk has an uncanny ability to play ping pong with the puck while throwing his weight around.

How about Datsyuk leading the wings in hits in the playoffs. He inherited the complete package from Yzerman and added some Barry Sanders on top.

I agree with that. But i bet if you ask any "Goalie" who he would want to come at him in a shootout he wouldnt pick Ovechkin, as Joe Cullen says. "He's a sniper"
Datsyuk may be a better puck handler, but Ovechkin is a better shot.
I wanted to update that Ovechkin stat and add 3more assists from tonight in the Capitals win to force a game 7. So he is now at 20 pts over 12 games. Thats sick.

Yeah Alex is pretty crazy and Datsyuk is a sneaky player who reminds me of Jagr, but with defensive skills.

The nhl did have a vote about a month back in which the players themself actually voted for Datsyuk to take the shot over any other player, fyi.

I would still take Ovechkin over Datsyuk, but they are still both top 5 talents on most hockey fans list.

I do find it funny that some did say he cherry picks all the time and have yet to really see it, just saying the highlight reel showed him doing what he does every night.

Also teams game plan just for Ovechkin, while I highly doubt other teams can do the same with Datsyuk. He has Hossa, Franzen, Lidstrom, Zetterberg, the list goes on of highly talented players that surround him. Datsyuk is the straw that turns the drink, imho.

Either way it is great the hockey has some super stars out on the ice, it's just too bad the games are played on maybe half of the tvs across the country, if that.

Ovechkin the sniper? A regular season stat of 528 shots with a shooting percentage of 10.6. The next closest in shots was 372. Pavel had 248 shots with a 12.9%. Pavel had less than half the shots and was over 2% better with them.

So much for that sniper....

Wow those are some pretty powerful stats!!!

It is funny you say Pavel had less than half the shots and was over 2% better? Like his stats will go up the more he shoots right?

At least no cherry picking mention, guess you must of actually seen more of him?

Also if your going to do stats you might want to check out Datsyuk with Alex in the playoffs, they are very close........Oh playoffs don't matter right? Or are you going to tell me takeaways are more important than goals?

Also what happened when he could've put the game in to overtime last night? Stoned!! Thought he was a 2% better sniper?

Watch the game tonight and you'll see why Ovechkin is the best.

Ok, if Datsyuk scores any goals that lead to a Red Wings victory he is better than Ovechkin?

Go Wings, Go Datsyuk!!!
