Another life was taken away too early this weekend when just retired NFL superstar Steve McNair was murdered in is apartment Saturday morning.
When I heard the news of his death I was shocked. As a kid Steve was one of my favorite players. From the time he joined the NFL his toughness and ability to win games on pure will drew me to respect and admire his game.
I remember being upset when the Titans lost the Super Bowl in 1999 because I wanted McNair, George and Kearse to get a ring. Steve was never able to get a ring, but he is one of those players who changed the game almost by himself.
McNair was just one of those NFL players that was just fun to watch. He will be missed by all who knew him and all those who knew of him. From everyone at Detroit Drive Bye our thoughts and prayers go out to the McNair family. Especially his 4 children and wife he had to leave so early.
I saw this video of McNair's retirement. It honestly gave me the chills listening to him talk about spending time with his family. A nice tribute.
"Don't bring a knife to a gun fight", the old saying goes. This would hold up for most people on the Earth who understand a gun, Plaxico Burress would be that exception to the rule. How stupid did he feel after shooting himself in the leg? Plaxico has so much God given talent and barely seems to put much effort into getting better.
He never seems to show up for practice, yes PRACTICE, and if he is on your fantasy team you know how his status is doubtful for the entire season. Yet when he steps on the field he is a game changer and always seems to pull off some of the most amazing catches. You're a great player Plax, but an even bigger idiot for shooting yourself in the leg and probably getting some time in the pen for it.
4). Chad Johnson/Ocho Cinco -
On the field I can't get enough of his antics, but to change your name and still not be in the top 100 of jersey sales? I would have to get some serious $$$$ to change my name like I'm sure many others would. To also change your name to a number is just ridiculous, not surprising that Chad would be the one to do it. I could see Chad Fire breather or Chad Happy Feet, but to go with a number that you think is cool because it is in Spanish is lame and dumb in my book.
Chad also gets dumb points for his threats about not attending camp or holding out. Chad you're not a good enough player to act that way.
*Chad can get off of this list if he is able to get in the top ten of NFL jersey sales*
3). Matt Jones -
If only Matt Jones put as much into working on football and getting better as he did his criminal life he would be in Honolulu every year. Jones was drafted out of Arkansas to be a WR for Jacksonville, after he played QB in college. This was a shock to many who thought he was a risky pick, which it turned out to be.
Jones has had a rough year after being arrested last summer for felony possession of a controlled substance. Here is a little more from wikipedia:
Jones then went on to test positive for alcohol, violating his probation and putting his plea deal at risk.
Jones is so high on the list because he has to know that bringing drama to any team is only worth how good that player is, Jones is not worth any drama at this point.
2). Brandon Marshall -
3 years in the league and Marshall has become a familiar name for both his on and off field antics. Just yesterday Marshall demanded a trade from the Broncos after having surgery on his hip in March. Sure Brandon, teams are just lining up to take a guy who isn't at 100%, has been in trouble with the law for violent crimes, and seems to only care about himself.
It seems pretty crazy how much trouble he has been in and always seems to get a good plea deal out of it, the power of a good lawyer I guess. Here is one paragraph that caught my eye:
According to an article published in the Rocky Mountain News on July 28, 2008, Douglas County deputies fielded "about 11" calls to Marshall's home since January 2006. The article stated that one one call resulted in Marshall being arrested (the March 26, 2007 domestic dispute), and some did not involve him at all.[47]
Also calling out Joey Porter and not backing it up, isn't good for street cred.
I can imagine Marshall being one of the bigger superstars in the league if he is able to get around better people and able to control his temper. Until he realizes that and sees that he could be making more money if he falls in line and just stays out of trouble, he will continue to be number 2 on this list.
Also here is a link to the latest rumors on Marshall being traded - LINK
1). Donte Stallworth -
Just after signing a new contract Stallworth decided he needed to be some where in the early morning hours after a night of drinking. Sadly Stallworth hit a man who was trying to cross a busy street and catch a bus. He was then charged with Manslaughter.
Today he reached an agreement with both the court and family to avoid any future civil $uit. That means he lost a boat load of money in lawyers, to the victims family, and in wages.
Michael was released from prison to serve the remainder of his sentence from his home due to the over crowdedness of Virginia prisons.
Vick still needs to get reinstated by the commish, but I believe he deserves another shot to play in the NFL. Many people everyday are released from prison with the hope of having a second chance in society. Michael did the time he was sentenced to and now deserves another chance to do what he is good at. That is being an NFL quarterback.
I know a lot of people will disagree with me, but as someone who has been through the legal system, I believe everyone deserves a second chance but maybe not a third or forth. We will have to wait and see what happens in this story over the summer. Hopefully everyone that has hated Vick so much since the dog fighting can look past it and understand he has served his punishment. And hopefully Vick has turned a new leaf and is ready to be a new man.
We are hopefully about to begin a new era of the Detroit Lions. We have all been just disappointed during the Matt Millen era, but Millen did one thing right during his tenure here. He drafted Calvin Johnson. We hope Calvin is here for many years, but that all depends on how things progress over the next few years. I put a few videos of Megatron up here for all of you. Enjoy!
Here's the best play of the 2008 season for Detroit.
It is so nice to sit at my computer once again and keep hitting refresh over and over to see whether or not my fantasy team can win the game for me. Also I love the smack talk and having something to look forward to other then the Lions every Sunday.
As I'm sure many of you out there are aware of how bad the Lions looked against a very suspect team in Atlanta. I really just don't understand why they can never turn the corner - Millen!!! We continue to suck in the draft and don't even have our first two picks out there starting!?!? Just take a look a the good teams in the NFL who make the playoffs. Even with their great teams they are still able to find picks and have them starting on a team that is better then the Lions.....
It shouldn't get to me anymore being a Lions fan all my life but I'm not a sports fan from Atlanta or Carolina who could give a shit less about their NFL team. I'm a Lion fan and I want them to win a Lombardi Trophy someday. I know this is probably not realistic at this time with Millen wasting draft after draft and Marinelli blowing smoke up everyone's ass at his pressers.
As for the Wolverines, they still looked like a team in transition with a new football coach and complex system. I'm still hearing the fans on the radio talk about the recruiting class and how he is trying to make square pegs fit in round holes, yes that is true in some ways. I understand that every once and awhile they can line up and run right at the defense but in the end will doing this for one year help the program down the road? No it won't.
This team is very young and all the experience they get now learning and running the offense will only help us when we continue to get the players in here that are needed for the system to be the most effective. Understand Michigan fans this team is very very young and they would be the same for Llyod if he was here. For as bad as it looks though Notre Dame still looks worse and I think UM can pull it off once again against the fat guy.
Go Blue!!
One more little note before the vids. I was sad to see Tom Brady go down and this issue has been covered more then enough. I just wish him luck in his comeback and know he will be fine after having the same injury to both of my knees.
Mike and Mike on Monday Night also suck. They should just let Ditka be in there by himself. I bet he wouldn't even talk sometimes and just let people watch the game without an annoying voice every second of the game.
What would it look like if NFL players had a fantasy football draft? The Washington Redskins will show you. (Longer video but well worth the watch for any fantasy football player)
Here is a highlight from the Georgia/CMU game. Great play by Knowshon Moreno who may be up for the Heisman this year.
Hey settle down police man
Real life Quagmeyer (Seth MacFarlane) gets kicked in the nuts, “Giggity Giggity”
Here are some random thoughts about the recent moves since the opening of free agency in the NFL last week along with a few great videos that I try to post everyday.
Joey Harrington was finally waived by the Falcons. It’s so funny that he wanted to blame the Lions organization for his poor play, but two teams later they have both come to the same conclusion – This guy is a backup QB at best.
Cleveland has just signed Shaun Rodgers to a six year deal with 20 million guaranteed. Good luck with that. If I lived in Cleveland right now I would find out what Rodgers favorite food is and open a restaurant within a block from his house, opportunities people.
Asaunte Samuel has took the big pay day and gone to the Eagles who were also close (various sources) to signing Randy Moss. He says that he came to the eagles to cause he felt he had a better chance of winning a super bowl there than in New England. Just tell us the truth Asaunte, you wanted to get paid. Good for you, I would do the same but please spare us the cookie cutter quotes.
Donte Stallworth has signed on to be a Brown. I see him being a big addition to a team that has already locked up Jamal Lewis and Derek Anderson to new contracts. They also have two good play makers in Edwards and Winslow to boot. Watch out for the Browns next year as they are making good moves to not take a step backwards, despite what you think about Shaun Rodgers.
The Lions have made numerous signings of players that nobody has really ever heard of or any other teams seemed to go after. This is nothing new to Lions fans and hopefully a couple of these guys can get some playing time and help out, I would not hold my breath though.
Michael Turner has signed onto the Atlanta Falcons who then decided to part ways with Warrick Dunn. I think they will have a great running back tandem between Turner and Norwood come next year. Other than that Falcons fans will have a tough season with a another new coach at the helm from the disaster that was Patrieno.
NY Giant Players - There are many different players on the Championship Giants team that are cashing in on the Super Bowl victory, as they should. This team will look very different next year, but I'm sure they will find a way to surprise everyone again.
Dan Morgan decided to go to New Orleans instead of Detroit. Now I know its bad when players want to go their instead of coming to Detroit ugghhhhh.
Now for the vids.
This is a really funny video from Japan of course! Wait until about 1:30 into the video, IT'S WELL WORTH THE WAIT.
